Portrait of Lydia Bradley in 1848

A sepia-tone photograph of Mrs. Lydia Bradley that appeared in the July 8, 1893 issue of Scientific Magazine. The photograph was taken by a Peoria photographer. However, Mrs. Bradley appears as a much younger woman. That, plus the fact that her hairstyle and dress are from the 1860s, suggests that this picture was taken from earlier image, when she was in her 40s. The photograph is a headshot, taken from her left. Mrs. Bradley's dark eyes look straight ahead. Her lips are drawn straight across her face, yet she has a pleasant appearance. Her hair is parted in the middle and shaped along the sides of her face, then pulled back over her ears and up on top top of her head. Four large ringlets are positioned like a crown on her head, and from them her hair falls in long, loose ringlets to her shoulders. She is wearing small, drop earrings with two pendants at the end. She wears a jacket over a white blouse. The lace collar of the blouse stands against her neck. A narrow scarf is tied loosely around the blouse collar and formed into a wide, flat bow in the front. A gold chain is layered over the scarf and a gold cross hangs from the chain on top of the bow. The neck of the jacket has a lace collar, which lies flat on the jacket. The jacket is dark in color and appears to be wool.
