![]() In this early 20th century, black and white photograph, 11 Bradley Polytechnic Institute students are working in the chemistry lab. The photographer stood high on a ladder to capture this view of the entire room, with its high ceilings, open transom above the door to the left, and wall of opaque windows at the far end. Chandeliers hang from the ceiling on long iron poles. Four lights with colored-glass shades extend out from the bottom of each chandelier. On either side of the center aisle are four rows of display cases with glass shelves crowded with bottles of various sizes. Worktables are located on both sides of the shelves. The students lean over the tables fulfilling an assignment. There are nine women and two men working in the lab. The young women wear their hair pulled back off their faces and in a bun on the top of their heads. Their plain, light-colored, long-sleeved blouses are tucked into dark, floor-length skirts. The men wear dark suits with high-collared white shirts. | |
