Painting of Lydia by Hardin

Painting of Lydia Bradley by Hardin

Peoria artist William Hardin painted this large, oil portrait of Lydia Bradley. For his model, he used the photograph of Mrs. Bradley in front of her house. Mr. Hardin’s view is a tighter close-up. She is seated, as she was in the photograph, and he paints her from just below the waist up. The artist pictures her indoors, seated in a high back, buttoned-leather chair. The leather is pale burgundy in color. To her right is a side table with a red-leather book and a covered, metal urn on it. Mrs. Bradley looks directly at the artist, who stands slightly to her left. Mr. Hardin captures her cool, confident expression. For more about her clothes and jewelry, please listen to the description of “Mrs. Bradley in front of her house.”
