The Mississippi River flows south past Quincy,
Illinois. Quincy lies 100 miles west of
Springfield, the capitol city, and south west of
Chicago about 300 miles. As early as 1839 a stage
connected Rushville and Quincy and later extended
east toward Beardstown and Springfield.
